VODs at the moment seem to not support a large amount of people who would use them, which are mobile and users with low-end connections (or people with both). People use VODs to catch up on a stream they missed, re-watch moments or to check out what a streamer is like.
For many people this may be watching a VOD while out (e.g on a bus, work, school etc.), which will be done on either a slow public wifi connection or mobile data. Whilst the mobile data may be able to playback the VOD, watching the stream at source quality will lead to the user using up their data plans so people will avoid watching them.
480p is a good quality to provide for smaller streamers since it is less taxing on bandwidth and is watchable on mobile devices due to their screens PPI.
The same could be said about the streams themselves, by having it automatically add 480p transcoding to channels who have consistant 4+ average viewers for the past month and have over 100 followers. Otherwise smaller streamers will continue to move to other streaming platforms which provide this to streams with MUCH lower requirements.
Whilst I understand it does take more to provide this kind of service, it keeps viewers and streams in as currently it is one of the main reasons I hear of people not moving to mixer/moving away from it. For example I see streamers on mixer who are sitting with 70+ viewers and 2,000+ followers without any other quality options than source.Stubbs supported this idea ·
